Key Takeaways
- The Sokoke has fewer than 100 registered breeders worldwide — one of the rarest recognized cat breeds
- The American Wirehair is the rarest CFA breed by registration count: fewer than 50 annual registrations
- Rare cat breeds cost $1,500–$5,000+ with waitlists of 6–24 months
- CFA recognizes 45 breeds; TICA recognizes 73 breeds — many rare breeds are only recognized by one registry
- Cat breed rarity is less severe than dog breed rarity — most domestic cats are mixed breed (95%+), and the pedigree cat population is smaller overall
- Hybrid breeds (Bengal, Savannah) are common but early-generation (F1–F3) individuals are rare and expensive ($5,000–$20,000+)

Rare Hybrid Generations
Some cat "breeds" have common later generations but extremely rare early generations. The early-generation hybrids between domestic cats and wild species are far more expensive and difficult to obtain than later generations that are essentially domestic cats with exotic coloring.
| Breed × Generation | Wild Ancestor | Est. Available Annually (US) | Price | Legal Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savannah F1 | African serval | ~50–100 | $12,000–$25,000 | Illegal or restricted in many states |
| Savannah F2 | African serval | ~200–400 | $6,000–$12,000 | Restricted in some states |
| Bengal F1–F3 | Asian leopard cat | ~100–200 | $3,000–$10,000 | Restricted in some states (F1–F4) |
| Chausie F1 | Jungle cat | ~30–50 | $5,000–$15,000 | Restricted as exotic hybrid |
| Safari Cat (Geoffroy's hybrid) | Geoffroy's cat | ~10–20 | $10,000–$20,000+ | Not widely recognized; legal varies |
F1 Savannah cats (50% serval) are ~15–25 lbs, significantly larger than domestic cats. They retain many wild behaviors — climbing, water play, high prey drive — and are restricted or banned in many jurisdictions. By F5 (3.125% serval), Savannahs are essentially domestic cats in size and temperament with distinctive spotted coats, and are legal virtually everywhere.
